Look for my piece on Elvis
in
American History magazine,
marking the 30th anniversary of his death.
It's called "What We Talk About
When We Talk About Elvis."
My piece about the rise of youth culture will appear in the October issue of
American History.

I've been a book-reviewing monster
for the St. Petersburg Times. Watch for upcoming reviews of The Lincoln Highway by Michael Wallis, Love Kills by Edna Buchanan and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead by Crystal Zevon.
Check out the Web site to see some recent reviews. You may have to click on the 'coverage from the last 60 days' link at the top. Some of my reviews have been running in midweek editions as well.

I was named a Fellow
of the World Technology Network
at its summit in San Francisco in November 2006. It was a fantastic event and I made a speech on the subject of serendipity.
The video is posted at www.wtn.net.

Works
in progress
I'm working on Outlaw Journalist,
a biography of Hunter S. Thompson for W.W. Norton.
It will appear in summer 2008, so watch this space for details.
I'm also assembling an anthology about growing up in Florida.
I'll post updates on these projects on this site
now and then.

If you're looking for a swell musical experience when you're next in Key West, find Barry Cuda (left, above, with a visiting degenerate). He usually plays at Sloppy Joe's, the Hog's Breath or B.O.'s Fish Wagon, home of the greatest fish sandwich on the face of the Earth. His schedule is at www.barrycuda.com

A Rosey retirement
My longtime colleague
Jon Roosenraad (center, at a tailgate party with two of his admirers) is retiring after 38 years at the University of Florida. This man had the wisdom to hire me in 1986. In honor of his retirement, friends, colleagues and former students helped me prepare a tribute, which you can see here. You can view the show as a series of dissolves or you can view it at your own pace. When we get to the part with my youngest children in it, let me assure you that they were given empty beer bottles as props, for purposes of this tribute. They were not actually drinking.

Here I am -- much hairier and younger -- conducting an onstage interview with Hunter S. Thompson during his appearance at Western Kentucky University, where I used to teach. The photo is by then-Western student Don Bruce who now -- small world that it is -- works for the newspaper in Middletown, N.Y., that fired Hunter in 1959 for destroying a vending machine.
